Healthy Mother’s Day Ideas from Legacies Health Centre

A little bit of thought and some planned quality time are sure to create a memorable Mother’s Day. Here are two simple and inexpensive ideas to add a theme of “health” into your plans for Sunday:

  1. Go for a walk. Walking is one of the simplest forms of exercise, and something most everyone can do at their own pace. A good walking pace is one that you can carry-on a conversation, which your mother will of course value. Walking helps lower blood pressure, helps prevent type II diabetes, and will help your mom reduce her risk of getting osteoporosis. Natural endorphins are released when you walk, as well as dopamine – the body’s “happy hormone” – so you are sure to create a happy memory here!
  2. After your walk, it’s time to hydrate. Here is an easy recipe that is sure to score you points!

Pressed Watermelon with Basil Water *

watermelon and basil water (1)Ingredients

  • 4 cups red or yellow seedless watermelon chunks (about 1/4 large melon)
  • 6-8 large basil leaves
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon white wine vinegar
  • 4 cups chilled water

Combine watermelon chunks and basil leaves in a colander placed over a large bowl. Using a metal ladle or spoon, press watermelon to extract as much juice as possible. (The remaining pulp should be fairly dry.) Season the juice with sea salt and white wine vinegar, and strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a large pitcher. Add 4 cups chilled water, stir, and serve.

IMS Physiotherapy in Surrey

IMS Physiotherapy Treatment in Surrey

Legacies Health Centre, located in Surrey BC at 604-591-5569, offers a wide range of treatment options, which includes IMS (intramuscular stimulation) used by our registered physiotherapists. Below is some information about IMS and how it is used in physiotherapy treatments to help get our patients better.

At Legacies Health Centre, if you are seen by a physiotherapist for IMS treatments, small thin needles are used to “reset” unhealthy muscle tissues (often referred to as trigger points). With IMS, no medication or substance is injected in to the skin, just the needle itself. The needles used by the physiotherapist in IMS treatments are similar to those used in traditional Chinese acupuncture. The application of the needle, however, is significantly different from traditional Chinese medicine.

IMS needles are intended to be used on tight, sensitive “knots” or bands of muscle tissue that may have been irritated by posture, trauma (such as a motor vehicle accident), and day- to-day activities such as sports or work. In Surrey at Legacies Health Centre, the actual IMS technique with the IMS Physiotherapy in Surreyphysiotherapist is just one part of the visit, and may take anywhere from only 3-10 seconds. If required, the physiotherapist will move on to the next group of muscles. While IMS only takes 3-10 seconds per muscle, its effects typically last much longer. Our physiotherapists aim to use IMS to cause neurophysiological changes to the local tissue and nervous system.

Physiotherapist in Surrey at Legacies Health CentreSince utilizing IMS in my physiotherapy practice, I have seen quicker and more effective results in treating muscle and nerve pain than I would have seen before. The effects last longer, and the changes are almost immediate.” – Jasub Jarquin, Physiotherapist in Surrey& Delta BC at Legacies Health Centre

IMS has been supported heavily in current research to treat chronic myofascial pain. Clinically, our physiotherapists find it is effective in numerous treatments for nerve/musculoskeletal conditions, such as:

  • Tennis Elbow/Golfer’s Elbow
  • Chronic mechanical low back pain
  • Headaches (ie. Cervicogenic)
  • Plantar fasciitis/Achilles Tendinopathy
  • Postural dysfunction related to the Neck, Midspine, Low Back or Pelvis
  • Patellofemoral Pain or Mechanical Knee Pain
  • Sciatica/Piriformis syndrome

Low Back Pain - Legacies Health Centre

Low Back Pain resolved with Targeted Chiropractic Treatment

At Legacies Health Centre in Surrey, we utilize the latest research in low back pain. A recent study out of the UK tells us that not all low-back pain is the same, and that receiving targeted treatment to address low back pain is the key to greater success. Targeted treatment, which could be provided by our highly skilled chiropractors at Legacies Health Centre, had incredible treatment outcomes such as:

1. Better physical and emotional functioning
2. Higher quality of life
3. Reduced disability due to low back pain
4. Lowered healthcare cost
5. Less days missed from work

The researchers concluded that in today’s healthcare, many people suffering from low back pain are not receiving targeted treatment, and have generally poor clinical outcomes because of it. At Legacies Health Centre, using research like this and targeted treatment for low back pain ensures you get better, faster, and at the lowest cost.

If you have never seen a chiropractor for low back pain before, here is a video that will help answer some common questions: Chiropractic at LEGACIES

If we can help get you better, faster, and at the lowest cost with targeted low back treatment for your low back pain, call us today at 604-591-5569 and speak with our friendly receptionist.

Integrated Multi-disciplinary Approach Wins

An integrated multidisciplinary approach to your health is a new and emerging trend in healthcare around the world, and at the heart of Legacies Health Centre.  Simply said, different therapies working together are better than just a single professional providing treatment.  Studies show that when patients choose a treatment course that includes a team of professionals working together, that they improve greater and at a lower cost compared to a single profession approach (American Journal of Orthopsychiatry).

At LEGACIES, we work together to find solutions for our patients, and get faster results.  A faster result means you pay less out of pocket.

teamwork“It makes sense to work as a team.  We (the different professionals) went to school and studied a very specific health profession’s approach to treating injury and illness.  But when we step back, you have to realize that there are many ways to treat the same condition.  No matter what your profession, we all have the same goal: to get the patient better as soon as possible.   At our clinic, we recognize that we all come to work with different tools and tricks of our trade.  When we communicate openly together, with the patient’s goal of getting better as our main focus, we realize that as a team we can often better help the patient.  This is what we try to do each day at LEGACIES.”

Adryon Hutton, Co-owner & RMT at LEGACIES

Lowering the patient cost continues to be an area LEGACIES excels at, by third-party direct billing insurers, and now recently billing more extended medical plans than ever.  Check-out our services, programs, discounts, and third-party billings at the facility in Surrey, BC.

Treating Myofascial Pain Syndrome with Nutrition and Massage Therapy

Treating Myofascial Pain Syndrome with Nutrition and Massage Therapy in Surrey, BC.

Did you know that nearly half of the patients treated for chronic myofascial pain have some form of vitamin inadequacy which affects lasting relief from pain? Vitamin inadequacy has been shown to increase irritability of myofascial trigger points. Thus if lasting results are to be achieved, the vitamin inadequacies must be addressed.

naturopathThere are several key vitamins and minerals that are associated with myofascial pain relief—vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, C, D, E, K, biotin, folic acid, potassium, sodium, calcium, iron and zinc. Vitamin B12 and folic acid inadequacy are more strongly related to chronic myofascial pain syndromes (MPS) than others. Insufficient vitamin B12 and folic acid reduces blood cell production. Blood cells carry oxygen to the muscles and plays a role in energy metabolism. When there is a dysfunction or energy crisis sensitizing substances are released which interacts with local pain receptors leading to pain at the myofasical trigger points.

While massage therapy is an excellent treatment option for mysofascial pain syndrome, vitamin supplementation will help to create more long lasting effects. The Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) at Legacies Health Centre takes an integrated approach to pain management and may refer you to other practitioners within our clinic to address any underlying vitamin and mineral deficiencies that may be delaying your recovery.

You may be experiencing myofascial pain syndrome if you have any of the following:

  • Deep, aching pain in a muscle
  • Pain that persists or worsens
  • A tender knot in a muscle
  • Difficulty sleeping due to pain

Our qualified and highly trained RMTs can further assist you with diagnosis and treatment to restore you to optimal health and wellness.

Santa Claus

Breaking News: Health Team helps Santa

This December the practitioners at Legacies Health Centre helped Santa’s strained back and arguably saved Christmas.

It was a typical snowy day in the North Pole when Santa slipped on some ice on his way to the Workshop, and strained his lower back.  Luckily he knew who to call, and traveled to Surrey, BC, to the Legacies Health Centre.  According to Paula Littlejohn, Integrated Health & Wellness Director,

“We were able to offer Santa with what we call an Integrated Approach, which is simply the coordinated team approach of our many different health practitioners – something that we offer all our patients.”

And that’s exactly what they did! After a detailed assessment, it was determined Santa was suffering from a muscle strain (pulled muscle) which had his lower back in spasm. Santa said,

“I could hardly walk and the pain was shooting down my leg.”

Santa ClausHis first treatment on Day 1 (same day as his injury) was with the Registered Acupuncturist to control pain and reduce spasm.  Santa appreciated the recommendation to use Tournesol lotion for the first 3 days to control inflammation and spasm.  On Day 2 and Day 4, Santa received Registered Massage Therapy which began reducing muscular tightness and restoring flexibility. Here’s what Adryon Hutton, RMT had to say:

“We see this type of injury all the time in the clinic and its what we call a First Degree Muscular Strain. Basically the muscle fibres get overstretched, and there can even be slight micro tearing. It is easily treated. Santa was no exception. After our two treatments, Santa was already wanting to return to the North Pole. I did notice however that his lumbar vertebrae were not moving well, so I wanted him to consult our chiropractor before hopping in his sleigh.”

So on Day 6, Santa was seen by Dr. Sharon Dhaliwal, DC, for Chiropractic Care.

“With a simple adjustment, Santa was his old self again. It’s very common that joints stiffen or get restricted after an injury – even if that injury was of muscular origin. Because Santa was not moving very well due to spasm, the joints in his back were becoming compromised. This could have progressed to a worse, more complex chronic injury, but with early intervention it was a simple fix.”

And so after just 1-week at the Legacies Health Centre, Santa was returning to the North Pole in time for Christmas.  An Integrated Health Team Approach is always part of the care-process for all the Legacies Staff.  The Legacies Health Team has suggested to Santa to start Dr. Shalviri’s Naturopathic 8-week Weight-loss Program once the holidays are over.

Get better faster & cheaper!

How important is it to follow my massage therapist or chiropractor’s treatment plan?  Simple: do you want to get better as soon as possible and at the lowest cost?  Because that’s what the goal of your treatment plan is all about!

Get better faster & cheaper!

At Legacies Sports Massage & Chiropractic, we’re all about getting results – its what we’re known for and is likely why you were referred to our clinic.  So that means outlining a specific Treatment Plan (like a road-map to recovery) for each of our patients.  This is specific to you – based on your assessment – to ensure you get better as soon as possible.  Sooner means cheaper, right?  You bet it does!  Without a clear Treatment Plan (or if you don’t follow your practitioner’s advice), you will find that it is “pain” that keeps bringing you back to the clinic – and that is often too late.  You may find you get into a chronic cycle, and never fully recover if this is the case.  So what’s our advice?  Follow our advice! Do your part, and we’ll do ours – and the results will be amazing!

If you are unclear about your Treatment Plan that your practitioner has designed for you, please just ask.  ** Did you know that Legacies Sports Massage & Chiropractic is one of the only clinics in Surrey & Delta that gives written Treatment Plan slips to our patients, and sends a Patient Progress Report to all referring doctors? We’re proud to be your choice – thank-you!
